Hey, Hot Shot! Volume IV, Edition II

NEW YORK, NY – Jen Bekman Gallery is pleased to present Hey, Hot Shot! (volume iv, edition ii), featuring thirteen works by five photographers: Yijun Liao, John Mann, Hosang Park, Cara Phillips, and Donald Weber. Hey, Hot Shot! is the gallery’s critically acclaimed international photography competition. The newest Hot Shots join ranks with hundreds of talented photographers whose careers have launched here. Two from the year’s ten total Hot Shots will soon be selected as Ultras and slated for solo shows and representation at the gallery. Previous Hot Shot showcases and solo shows have garnered attention from the New York Times, The New Yorker, Art in America, PDN, STEP Magazine, and The Village Voice.

An opening reception will be held at the gallery on Friday, January 30, 2009 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Hey, Hot Shot! (volume iv, edition ii) will be on view Friday, January 30 through Saturday, February 14, 2009 at Jen Bekman Gallery, located at 6 Spring Street, New York, NY.

The latest edition of Hey, Hot Shot! exemplifies the vast spectrum of photography practiced today. Images range from documentary to conceptual to visual abstractions that reference painting and sculpture. At one end of the continuum, documentary photographer Donald Weber seeks to provoke change through an investigation of the struggle for power in Russia, and, with a conceptual approach, Cara Phillips scrutinizes the beauty industry in the documentation of plastic surgery offices. Yijun Liao departs from the real with a wry and witty view, creating imaginary films and places where traditional gender roles in relationships are reversed. Hosang Park’s bird’s eye view of Korean parks create an abstract map of fabricated spaces that simultaneously reference Korean capitalism and modernist painting, while John Mann makes the map the final destination in photographs of maps that have a sculptural geography of their own.

Jen Bekman notes: "One of the best things about Hey, Hot Shot! is that it’s a completely democratic competition and so, the photographers we end up with are incredibly diverse, in age, sex, ethnicity, geography, and subject matter. What we offer is unique and we are proud to offer it.
