press release :: Hey, Hot Shot! Volume IV, Edition I

NEW YORK, NY – Jen Bekman is pleased to present Hey, Hot Shot! (Volume IV, Edition I), debuting the first five photographers selected in the gallery’s international photography competition, now in its fourth year. This edition’s talented winners are Juliane Eirich, Derek Henderson, Kate Orne, Roc Herms Pont, and Colleen Plumb. Coming to us from around the globe, the exceptional quality of these photographers reflect the competition’s more rigorous and selective structure.

The exhibition will be on view Friday, August 8 through August 23, 2008 at Jen Bekman Gallery, located at 6 Spring Street, New York, 10012.

An opening reception for the artists will be held on the evening of Friday, August 8 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the gallery.

While diverse in subject matter and style, all of the Hot Shots demonstrate a shared interest in duality and contradiction. Using photography as a means to explore polarities, they are all deeply committed to their investigations of the world. The work of Colleen Plumb and Derek Henderson focuses on the curious beauty found in the everyday, whether it is right under our noses or a mysterious meeting of incongruous elements. Also trying to answer the unanswerable, Kate Orne travels through impoverished communities in the Middle East, pulling back the curtain of societies that both rely on and recoil from women in the sex industry. Regardless of where their cameras are pointing, these five artists are concerned with their relationships to their surroundings and with the power of our roles as individuals. Their work points to the rigor of looking as agency as well as empathy.

Jen Bekman, the gallery’s owner and competition’s founder, comments: "I'm thrilled with how this show came together. Hey, Hot Shot's new format, which features fewer photographers who get more exposure, made for some fierce competition. Fortunately, our incredible panel was up for the challenge; I'm so pleased with the results of our deliberations. The exhibition is an amazing cross section of new work, representing a wide range of styles and subject matter made by photographers from around the world, all at various stages of their careers.

“Our panel is stellar; their credentials are impressive, as is their commitment to reviewing and supporting the work of emerging photographers. I'm so grateful to them for sharing their time and insights: Michael Bierut, Christine Collins, Dana Faconti, Caterina Fake, Stephen Frailey, Raul Gutierrez, Darius Himes, Jenni Holder, Julia Leach, Nion McEvoy, Lesley A. Martin, and Kent Rogowski."

Hey, Hot Shot! at Jen Bekman Gallery, 6 Spring Street (between Elizabeth and Bowery) New York, NY, 10012.
Hours: Wednesday — Saturday, noon – 6pm or by private appointment.
