Best Midwestern: Photography from the Heartland

NEW YORK, NY - jen bekman is pleased to present a collection of works by seven emerging Midwestern photographers. A reception for the artists will be held on Thursday, July 22 from 6pm - 8pm. The exhibit remains on view through August 27, 2004.

The fifteen photographs in the exhibition explore the spirit of the Midwest, each from the unique perspective of the artist. The landscapes, which vary in their exact geographical locations across the country, all reveal the varying characters and moods of the Midwest. One of the exhibitors, Peter Haakon Thompson, establishes an intimate personal connection as he places himself amidst the landscape in his photo. Overall, each distinct image contributes to the harmonious blending of an innovative, emotional response to the great American Midwest.

Best Midwestern is the New York debut for four of the artists: Susan Boecher, Justin Newhall, Craig Prehn and Peter Haakon Thompson. Alec Soth and Deborah Stratman were featured in the most recent Whitney Biennial. Tema Stauffer is represented by jen bekman and this show, which she co-curated, marks her 6th time exhibiting work at the gallery. Tema's first New York solo show is scheduled for October at jen bekman.
