DANA MILLER: SECOND NATURE NEW YORK, NY - Dana Miller's New York solo debut of color photographs opens at jen bekman, 6 Spring Street New York, NY on Tuesday November 16, 2004 and remains on view through December 23, 2004. An opening reception for the artist will be held on the evening of Tuesday November 16: 6pm to 8pm at jen bekman. At first glance, the photographs in Second Nature might be landscapes, beautiful meditations on color, texture, light and lushness. It is the subtle control of Miller's choice and framing which give the viewer not nature itself, but rather Miller's creation of nature: truncated, stained, comprised of colors that suggest a kind of hyper-reality. Through her lens, the natural turns supernatural and transports us to an alien landscape. Miller's images are stages set for a drama to unfold, where something or someone could be lurking just outside of the frame. They are ripe with mystery, otherworldly narrative and ultimately, evidence captured. Novelist Matthew Sharpe, member of the Bard College graduate faculty where Miller was recently awarded her MFA, contributed an essay on Miller's work (available in full on the gallery's web site). He writes, "Dana Miller's photographs resist easy readings and reward multiple viewings. They ask us to undo the training our senses have undergone, to unharness our eyes from visual convention. They encourage us to relinquish the control we are used to exerting over the things we look at, and over looking itself. They tell us that the eyes know things the mind can't comprehend."
