The portraits in this series simultaneously embrace splendor and decay. Murray's subjects populate the landscape, but live in various states of trying to connect to it. Echoes of classical archetypes and mythic images manifest themselves in banal and beautiful places. A dichotomy of connection and disconnection occurs within the narrative of the portraits, as well as in the contrast between contemporary urban and traditional rural landscapes. Murray's last few summers have been equally divided between traveling the country, living in upstate New York, and living in the city. Backyards, the beach, an abandoned lot; these are familiar and exotic settings where conflict is explored.
