statement

Mrs. Lynster Rockaway Beach, NY 2002
Surfer New Jersey 2003

The places where land and sea meet are points of entry into the mystery of the ocean. The subjects in these two photographs approach this place in contrasting ways. Mrs. Lynster appears to be enjoying the beach as a place of repose. Her expression is peaceful, perhaps nostalgic, as she is mysteriously unaffected by the converging birds. The surfer, part of a larger body of work of amateurs, is approaching the sea as an uneasy conqueror. There is a sense of ritual and adventure, while the misty weather accompanied by the surfers grip on his board as well as his wet suit adds a foreboding quality to the read of this photograph. He is a creature of the world; as uncomfortable on land as in the sea.
