20x200: Art Shanty Edition by Tema Stauffer
Image Credit: White Ice by Tema Stauffer. Read about it on the 20×200 blog.A portion of the proceeds from this edition will benefit The Art Shanty Projects.

As if two openings in one week weren’t enough, there are plenty of other things keeping me busy over the next few months.

20×200 continues apace with two new editions each and every week. Be sure to sign up for our mailing list to get advance notice on new editions.

I’m packing my long johns and heading off to Minneapolis for a few art-filled days (and nights.) I’ll be doing portfolio reviews (afternoon) and a presentation (evening) at the Minnesota Center for Photography on Monday, February 18th.

I’m also looking forward to attending The Art Shanty Projects and the opening of World’s Away at The Walker Art Center. Another show I won’t be missing is Ultra Karolina Karlic’s exhibition at Franklin Art Works.

In quick succession after that: Santa Fe, where I’m honored to be jurying Center’s Singular Image Prize for color photography, Austin, where I’m speaking on a panel at South By Southwest and Houston, where I’ll be reviewing portfolios at Fotofest.

If you love photography and find yourself in Amsterdam, be sure not to miss the Foam Fotografie Museum, an amazing vibrant venue for exhibitions of established and emerging photographers.

The most recent issue of Foam Magazine, their gorgeous quarterly magazine, includes Jen Bekman: Gallery Without Walls, a long format interview with me by writer Eric Miles, accompanied by portraits from the very excellent Stefan Ruiz.

We have lots of other great media in the pipeline. Some is still a secret, but be on the lookout for Jen Bekman Projects, especially 20×200, in a diverse array of publications including Wired, Redbook and The Artist Magazine.

Also on the horizon: big (exciting! awesome!) changes are in store for Hey, Hot Shot! in 2008.

Upcoming Excitement!

Turkey Amanita - Amy Ross
Turkey Amanita – Amy Ross

It’s been a little hectic lately, and new posts have been scarce. We are sorry. We’ll try better this month.

If you haven’t seen Amy Ross’ show Anima Mundi, this is your last chance! Thursday, June 7 will be the last day to see it and it’s definitely worth dropping by. We have gotten tons of positive feedback and am happy that people love the show.

In other news, we are installing a new jen@joe show at the Joe location on 13th between University Place and Fifth Avenue on Wednesday, June 6. (Which means you get fresh art with your morning coffee on Thursday the 7th!)

Another reminder, Hey, Hot Shot, Spring ‘07 Edition is opening on Wednesday, June 13, from 6-8pm. The show will be up from June 14–17, 2007 and quite a show it promises to be! Get on down, see the work and support the winners:

Clint Baclawski
Nina Berman
Michael Julius
Karolina Karlic
Mark Marchesi
Casey Orr
Justin James Reed
Pavel Romaniko
Kelly Shimoda
Daniel Traub

But things never stay quiet as A New American Portrait, a group photography show co-curated with Jörg Colberg of Conscientious, opens soon after on Friday, June 22, which means a wild week for the jb staff.

Despite all of the upcoming craziness, we still have a moment to chat with friends. Jenni Holder, former Director of Edwynn Houk Gallery and current Hot Shot Panelist, dropped by the gallery earlier this week to say hello while she was in town. Check out her flickr (her children are very cute) and a past interview she conducted with Jen at Fotolog.

Stay tuned for more news and updates.

Jen@Joe (almost) 1 month later!

I can’t believe Jen@Joe has been up for almost a month! Wow, it really seems like yesterday I was standing at Kinkos laminating the Jen@Joe informational materials. . . So for those of you curious as to how things are going so far, here is a little update for you!
100_2063.JPG

Everyone at jen bekman is extremely excited with the progress at Jen@Joe. We love how everything looks, we love that Joe patrons keep taking postcards, and we especially love getting inquiries about Hey, Hot Shot! and the various photographs currently on view.

But how do the lovely people at Joe feel about it? Well I decided to contact Jonathan Rubinstein, the owner of Joe, to find out and here is what he had to say:

“The responses have been amazing – it seems like every other customer takes a postcard or asks a question. I think its going so well! It has made our place so much more interesting and definitely spread the word about both jen bekman and these specific artists. All in all, it seems to be a win-win. “

As if that weren’t good enough, Joe was recently voted “Best Coffeeshop in Town” by TimeOutNY! Congratulations Jonathan!
Jen@Joe can be found at Joe, The Art of Coffee located on 13th St. between, 5th Avenue and University Place. For more information regarding the photographs on view at Jen@Joe email sales@jenbekman.com

This is not a perfect representation of the logo since it’s a screengrab from a .pdf. (The posting of which is surely going to make its designer Frank Mikus a little crazy.) I think the new logo for jen@joe is so delicious, I couldn’t wait to get the proper file from him.

I’m super excited about the whole project overall – more wall space to hang gorgeous photos is always something I’m happy about, but also: I adore Joe, its friendly staff and its fabulous owner, Jonathan Rubinstein, who impresses me with his entrepreneurialism, his enthusiasm and his curiosity. I’m loving the jen@joe opportunity for a million reasons!

Intern Christine is loving it too, as she posted about over the weekend. Read her blogging debut Improving the Mood of NYC (One Cup O’ Joe at a Time).
