We’re busy bees here at Jen Bekman! The panel discussion on Photo Blogs is tonight at the School of ICP with panelists like Eliot Shepard, Jen Bekman, and Travis Ruse. Read more about it a couple posts down.

The Spring Hey, Hot Shots will open tomorrow with a reception from 6-8pm. As I said in the previous post, the awesome guys at Crumpler will supply beer, as part of their Beer for Bags event. You just might be able to win a free bag!

Exhibition Dates + Hours
Thursday through Sunday, June 8-11
Noon – 6pm (til 8 on Thursday)

You can also view some of the work the Hot Shots submitted on our flickr site and read some of their interviews on the HHS blog.

SlideLuck PotShow is coming up June 17th. The deadline for submissions is June 5, with the theme being “Grace.” Our Spring Hot Shot, Casey Kelbaugh, started the event in Seattle and many other cities. Great way to combine photography with audio (or silence.. depends on what you’re going for) and with people bringing in food, how great is that! I would love the combination of someone’s jambalaya with someone else’s chow mein. Mmm, food and art. Great combo! Another Spring Hot Shot, Sarah Small (HHS interview) also will be showing a slide show in the upcoming event. Lots of the jb family have contributed to the fun gathering!

Also, our represented artists have been working hard on the next show, Meditations in an Emergency, which will be opening June 20th. Read what all the artists were given as inspiration: Frank O’Hara’s prose poem, Meditations in an Emergency.

ONE More Week for HHS!

Posted in hey hot shot! on May 1st, 2006 by Christine

It’s getting down to the wire! Only one more week to enter the Spring edition of Hey, Hot Shot! (the deadline for entries is next Monday, May 8th).

As all of you (should) know, Hey, Hot Shot! debuts ten new talented photographers to the public four times a year with shows at jen bekman. The last show also got some great press, such as being featured in MetroNY, which you can read about here.

Remember, you can only enter via the website: www.heyhotshot.com

ALSO - remember to check out the Hey, Hot Shot! blog for updates about past and future editions of HHS!

jb in Art in America’s May Issue

Posted in at jen bekman, hey hot shot!, press on May 1st, 2006 by Jen Bekman Gallery

Art in America - May 2006

jen bekman is featured in the May issue of Art in America. Journalist Stephen Maine’s Report from New York: Down East is a round-up of Manhattan’s Lower East Side galleries. He describes it as a “mecca for independent, highly innovative new galleries.”

Here’s a snippet from what he has to say about jen bekman:

“Hey, Hot Shot” is the name of the quarterly four day long exhibition of 10 emerging photographers that Jen Bekman mounts in her diminutive storefront gallery on Spring Street just west of the Bowery. The shows allow Bekman a highly structured way to make contact with new artists, a favorite aspect of her work. The currently popular “poetic snapshot” esthetic is well represented among the photographers she works with inclduing Tema Stauffer, Dana Miller and Eliot Shepard.

Bekman… opened the gallery in March of 2003 with an emphasis on photography and an eye on the future New Museum location. Eschewing intellectual obscurities, she takes an unencumbered, “populist” approach to marketing her artists.

Sorry for the delay. . .

Bruce Grant to lead Positive Focus Critique on April 11th

Posted in elsewhere, events, hey hot shot! on April 10th, 2006 by Christine

Bruce Grant, Fearful Symmetry # 2

Well-known photographer and critic Bruce Grant, who received an honorable mention for the Winter ‘06 Edition of Hey, Hot Shot! at jen bekman, will lead an open Postive Focus critique at Safe-T-Gallery at 111 Front St. in DUMBO, Brooklyn on April 11th at 7 pm.

Positive Focus was founded to provide a Brooklyn community of emerging photo-artists with a supportive environment for artistic development, youth education and community outreach services. So if you are not already a member, this is a great opportunity to check it out (i.e. bring work and they might critique it if there is time).

Here is a little clip of what nyc.photobloggers.org contributor, Tim O’Connor had to say about Grant’s work:

Bruce Grant’s pictures have an unforced grace that comes very close to feeling casual. You suspect they might be fun to take. His subjects – mostly ordinary objects and patterns encountered on long walks through his native Philadelphia – are familiar to any American urban dweller. But you have not seen doors and air conditioners, signs and telephone poles, walls and chainlink fences like these before.

If you’re interested in seeing more of Bruce Grant’s work, check out his fotolog and Flickr pages. You can also find the complete post about this event on nyc.photobloggers.org here.

Winter Edition in the Press

Posted in at jen bekman, hey hot shot!, press on March 22nd, 2006 by Christine

While on the topic of the gallery getting some great press (such as Tuesday’s feature in MetroNY) it should be noted that the Hey, Hot Shot! Winter Edition showcase got some great mentions even though it was only up for a short period of time. Impressive! Gothamist, Flavorpill, Manhattan Users’ Guide and The L Magazine all wrote about the show – but our favorite by far was being shortlisted in the Village Voice:

“For the past three years, jen bekman has championed the up-and-coming young artist, particularly in the photography field. It’s appropriate then that the latest installment of her ‘Hey, Hot Shot’ series opens on Wednesday, the gallery’s third anniversary. This time she celebrates with Noah Addis, Benoit Aquin, Jessica Bruah, Claire Hester, Nicole Jean Hill, Andrew Long, Bob O’Connor, Erin Siegal, Rebecca Smeyne, and Rafil Kroll-Zaidi.”

Absolutely awesome!

I personally can’t wait to see who is chosen for the Spring Edition of Hey, Hot Shot! which, by the way, is officially open to submissions.
