Artist’s Statement
At the age of 10 I became transfixed by the idea of a yearbook portrait. Soon after, on a trip to Mexico to visit my grandparents during the holiday season, my brother and sister became my subjects. I shot roll after roll of film, posing them as I imagined a portrait photographer would. Since then I have become drawn to photographing the spaces in which people call home.
After my initial discovery of photography in Mexico, I began doing simple documentations of friends around the age of 15. When I went on to boarding school I got my first hands on experience with the darkroom learning the art of film processing. It is here that I became familiar with names such as Cindy Sherman, Walker Evans, Robert Frank and William Eggleston.
Currently, after many years of formal training and life experiences, I have found that I am most drawn to and inspired by interior spaces. The portraits and interiors in my body of work embrace the quiet splendor that can be found when allowed to breach the wall of privacy that enshrouds our daily lives.
Which artists inspire you? (Not necessarily photographers.)
Robert Adams, Todd Hido, Ellen Brooks. Also, music is a big inspiration for me.
Describe that moment when you knew for sure that photography was something you wanted to pursue seriously
My junior of high school was my first year at prep/boarding school. I documented that lifestyle and in the end made a book from it. After it was complete and I looked through it in its entirety, I knew that I wanted to do that on a larger level one day.
What kind of camera do you use?
Hasselblad. I also shoot with a Pentax 6×7 and a 35mm but the Hasselblad seems to be the camera I always go back to.
