NEW YORK, NY — Jen Bekman is pleased to present Kate Bingaman-Burt’s New York City solo debut, Obsessive Consumption, an exhibition of drawings, paintings and installations at Jen Bekman Gallery, located at 6 Spring Street, New York, NY. The exhibition will be on view Friday September 21 through Saturday October 27, 2007.

An opening reception for the artist will be held on the evening of Friday, September 21 from 6:00 to 8:00pm at the gallery.

Bingaman-Burt has developed Obsessive Consumption into a brand, a company and website and art project as a means to explore and showcase her personal relationship with money, shopping, branding, credit cards, celebrity, advertising and marketing.

“Kate’s work, and her approach to its distribution, embodies a wide range of contemporary ethos and practices” says gallerist Ms. Bekman, “She is incredibly versatile as a visual artist, employing drawing, typography, painting, photography, crafts and graphic design in service to a central theme. Using weblogs, Flickr and Etsy as a means for commerce and commentary, she participates cheerfully and critically in consumerism’s new frontier.”

She first exhibited in the gallery’s Summer 2006 Hey, Hot Shot! showcase and was later selected as an Ultra, one of four artists chosen from among 40 seasonal winners to be represented by the gallery. This is her third time exhibiting at Jen Bekman.

About the Artist

Kate Bingaman-Burt is an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Mississippi State University. She also is the founding partner of the Public Design Center.

Kate’s work has been featured in The New York Times and in multiple magazines GOOD, Print, Adorn, Dwell and How among them. Her work has been published in books like Hand Job! A Catalog of Type, The Artist’s Guide to Making Money, The Crafter Culture Handbook, and Becoming a Digital Designer.

Her website, Obsessive Consumption, has been a Yahoo! Pick of the Day and has been featured on numerous weblogs including Boing Boing, The Consumerist, Core77, Coudal Partners, Design Observer, Things Magazine, We Make Money Not Art and Unbeige.
