statement :: DemoCrafts / RepubliCrafts

My two favorite creative outlets are 1) writing political satire and 2) making things with my hands. I get to do both with my series DemoCrafts / RepubliCrafts. These ten handmade objects help me vent my frustrations with political parties, political clichés, political problems. These objects form visual jokes – almost like 3D New Yorker cartoons. I like to imagine the objects functioning out in the world. That makes me laugh. I also enjoy the absurd contrasts of, say, knitting + handguns, dolls + war, abortion + jewelry, terrorism + quilting. That makes me laugh too. Crafting is so warm and personal (and traditionally feminine). Politics can be cold and harsh (and traditionally masculine). I love bringing them together.
