statement

I work with the history of landscape painting in relation to contemporary landscape. This work is inspired by the confluence of internal experience and the shifting network of contemporary space.

My current project is based on 17-18th century Dutch and English marine-scapes and personal memory. At the time marine paintings presented images of the edge of technology, for navigation, speed, and the measurement of time and space. Battles shipwrecks, and piracy portrayed the relationships of technology, human agency and nature as well as told stories of political grandeur and defeat. Graphic shapes of sails collided with organic elements.

The architecture of my paintings is structured with the shapes of sails from one or several historical marine-scapes. Shapes that are inspired by current technology such as space sails and swarming networks and the future imaginary of space ships overlap. The specificity of these and other shapes, of organic lines and atmospheres, and of color are inspired by personal memories. As the painting takes shape I rewrite the memory which then influences the next set of choices. This dialogue continues as the painting is developed and the memory is expanded. In this process, cultural and technological past, present and future converse with one another and with my personal experience of past, present, and future.
