AGNES BARLEY: RECENT WORK NEW YORK, NY - Agnes Barley's New York solo debut of works on paper, opens at jen bekman, 6 Spring Street New York, NY on Wednesday September 8, 2004 and remains on view through October 9, 2004. An opening reception for the artist will be held on Wednesday, September 8, 6 - 8 PM. The paintings exhibited are explorations of inter-structural and intra-structural linear relationships. Barley creates a sense of horizon and space metaphorically; her clear vibrant lines pulsate on the page subtlety echoing the search for place. She is in essence creating architectural landscapes of internal perspective. Playwright Arthur Miller comments "these works are not 'pictures' but rather imagined captures of space in which structures under tension interact. The intention is to approach fundamental relationships in reality." The exhibition presents two bodies of work: The range of monochromatic smaller pieces in vibrant blue, magenta or orange focus on inter-structural line and form. The three large scale paintings explore the interrelation of both color and form, showing a more fluid and spontaneous aspect of Barley's work. Collector Dini von Mueffling writes "Barley's paintings are simultaneously familiar and utterly new. They are forms you cannot identify but recognize. The deliberateness of her strokes contrasts with the freeform sensibility, creating worlds in which hard meets soft and absence meets presence. In her work you see memory; hers and yours."
